Stars Surge Seattle to Potential Playoff Birth

By Dylan Shervill (Nov 2020) (Seattle Kraken) On Thursday 7th March 2024 / 4:25pm

Seattle WA,

For the last month is has been nothing but Smiles and Success for the Seattle Kraken. Earlier this seaon GM Shervill made some key moves to push Seattle to being a playoff team and those bets have paid off. Even further augmenting the lineup at the trade deadline. We are evaluating the series of moves that brought in size, skill and youth. It was nothing but win after win after win to the Kraken faithful that wanted to see them return to the post season and see a successful hockey club in Seattle.

Trade #1 - With the Washington Capitals

Received: D - Nikita Zadorov - G Darcy Kuemper

Sent: G - Sergei Bobrovsky W - Phil Kessel , FW - Brandon Davidson, FW - Lane Pederson, G  - Aaron Dell, 2024-RND:3-Sea.

Upon hearing the news of this trade a clear change of the guard was going to occur, bringing in a big intimidating enforcing defencemen such as Zadorov to bring an element that this team was missing. But also making a change in goal, Sergei Bobrovsky, the goalie that GM Shervill signed to that large 10+ Million dollar contract was on his way out.

Q "GM Shervill - Upon making this deal, what do you think that both Nikita and Darcy bring to the team?"

A "We needed to be more physical and that exactly what we are looking to do, I have evaluated Nikita's game extensively over the course of his career and I believe that he can be put into a position here where all of his skill are able to shine."

Oh and shine they have. Over the course of the last 38 games with the Kraken vs his first 31 games of the seasion, his current splits are:

    WSH   D    31    0    7    7    -1    17    27    31    0%    26

    SEA    D    38    1    12    13    6    35    38    34    2.94%    58

A major offensive increase as well as a major defensive increase in shots blocked while logging over 20 minutes per game. When asking Nikita about his play after being moved here is what he had to say.

"My family and I have fallen in love with the city and the fans, ever since day 1 we have been treated with nothing but kindness and respect. We are truly honoured to help this team get into the playoffs and hopefully make a deep run. I know we have the guys to do it. This journey has been a whole lot easier when guys that you've grown up with are along for the ride too. It makes you want to play more for each other more than yourself."

We will cover the familiar faces later...

Kuemper, a goalie that was truly struggling in Washington has had a resurgence (when he has been healthy) showing growth and improvement in all areas.

WSH 28    15    12    0    0.904    2.76    1630    2    0    75    778    384    5    0

SEA  26    17    7    1    0.918    2.62    1536    4    2    67    814    407    5    2

When discussing his improvement this season and becoming a pending Unrestricted Free Agent Keumper had this to say.

"There has been zero pressure put on me to take over games, in regards to injuries, I've talked to the staff multiple times and have told them that I'm ready to play. They're just making sure I'm 100% and won't have any setbacks come the playoffs. Wollsy and Lanksy are crushing it anyways. Always knew those guys could get the job done. With the rate they're playing I might not even be on managements radar!"

A laugh erupted through the room, rookie goaltender Joseph Woll and backup goaltender Kevin Lankinen have become a tag team tandem that have performed admirably in Kuemper's absences.

Lankinen - 11    3    4    1    0.886    3.57

Woll - 8    5    2    0    0.902    2.84

Woll has been outperforming Lankinen, however the majority of his stars were when Captain Cale Makar and others were out either due to injury or suspension. When asked about getting an opportunity to perform in the MFHL while only being a rookie, Woll had this to say

" Eaks says it every day, you just have to be ready when it's your time. Luck is Preparation meeting opportunity. So as long as I'm ready for my oportunities as best as I can be, I can't be disappointed with the outcome. Plus, who wouldn't love playing in front of those fans! They get the building ROCKING."

Not only did this initial trade free up salary cap, but it also brought in size and younger players to an aging Seattle club that needed to change if they wanted to continue to push toward qualifying for a playoff spot.

Grade:  A-

GM Shervill was not done adding to this Kraken roster,GM Shervill pulled a trigger on another move bringing a superstar forward into the fold.

Trade #2 - With the Buffalo Sabres

Received: C - Tage Thompson, D - Olli Maatta &  Y:2024-RND:5-Buf.

Sent: C - Roope Hintz , D - Ryan Suter ,  D -Shayne Gostisbehere

A trade where clearly both stars needed a change of scenery to be successful. Thompson coming over from the Sabres brings an imposing force in the top 6 as well as a much needed secondary scoring behind budding superstar Tim Stutzle. Antoher welcome addition in this trade was veteran defencemen in Olli Maata that brings more balance to this defensive group. This trade was a signal of Buffalo going all-in on a playoff run by acquiring aging veterans Ryan Suter & Shayne Ghostisbehere. GM Shervill had the following to say about the trade:

"Firstly, this trade is not a slight to Roope Ryan or Shayne, overall we needed to make a larger change to this group and this was one of if not the best possible option available. Being able to do right by Ryan and Shayne was a bonus as they were both looking to compete for a guaranteed playoff team and we were able to make their requests happen. I am super excited to see what Tage & Olli can add to this group as they're entering the prime of their careers."

Both Thompson and Maata have seen considerable impovement after coming to Seattle, both players have brought in a much needed attitude change to the roster while adding size to a perviously undersized Kraken lineup. When asked about their experiences in Seattle so far they both had some intertesting responses.

Thompson - "Well it certainly is a different atmosphere in Buffalo, in Buffalo the expectation was to win every game and expect to do so, I feel as though the previous group here was happy to win games but had no expectations on themselves to win.Thankfully we've come together as a group to change that, Cale and Gabe have been huge in that development and changing the way we are viewing this season and how we are now expecting to win every game regardless on who's out there. Eaks has put me in a perfect position to succeed here and I'm thankful that his trust in me has paid off. That, and the fans deserve winning hockey here in Seattle."

Paid off it has, Thompson has seen a significant increase in his offensive output as well as setting the tone in the defensive end, as shown below, Thompson has drastically improved his scoring pace and cemented himself as the second Line centre leading his own unit. With this newfound leadership Tage has led by example  while being flanked by Veterans who match his playstyle.

BUF -  33    10    18    28    -4    10    40    141    7.09%    6

SEA -   38    18    24    42    14    20    54    141    12.77%    18

Maata, who has a prevous connnections to players on this roster, had this to say about his time so far in Seattle:

"It's like I'm back in London again, Nikita and I are even sharing an appartment again, just focusing on hockey. Don't look in our fridge but getting back to our roots especially as a pairing having that exisitng synergy has cut down a lot of the learning curve here. Missing some time definitely hurt but the staff here has made it abundantly clear that they won't rush anyone back to play earlier than expected."

BUF - D    20    4    2    6    3    0    17    19    21.05%    17

SEA - D    27    2    4    6    8    5    20    26    7.69%    34

Note there isn't a huge offensive explosion with Maata, however he has fully bought into the Kraken's new defensive philosophy in getting in front of the puck. With injuries to Kuemper and Makar during this stretch, it's taken the entire teams buy-in to making sure not all the pressure is on Lankinen or Woll to stop every shot. Speaking of London and previous connections, there was a reunion in a sense for Maata and Zadorov, both were part of the 2012-2013 London Knights that advanced to the Memorial cup. GM Shervill & Coach Dallas Eakins are hoping that synergy can help push Seatle forward into making a deep run into the playoffs.

Grade: A

Once again, GM Shervill was not done. However, more of a depth acquisition was completed after bringing in players to shake up the top 6

Trade #3 - With the San Jose Sharks

Received: W - Vinnie Hinostroza, Y:2024-RND:5-San

Sent: G - Laurent Brossoit

In hindsight, you can see why GM Shervill made this move. There were multiple injuries to the forward core and the team was desparate to get some more depth at the position. There was also a log jam at Goalie and with the previously mentioned performance of Joseph Woll, there was an opportunity to trade an asset in Brossoit who's now been able to be a starter in San Jose rather than a 3rd goaltender or MFAHL starter. GM Shervill shared his thoughts on the trade.

"It is pretty simple, both the Sharks and us had needs that we needed to be addressed right away if we both wanted to make the playoffs and it was an easy deal to get done. We signed Laurent this offseason not knowing how ready Joseph was going to be as well as assuming that we may have multiple injuries at the position like we did last year. We are happy to bring in a guyu like Vinnie to fill a role on our bottom-six and hope he's able to contribute to our success and goal of reaching the playoffs."

Overall HInostroza in his 26 games with the Kraken has not been very effective. However most of that can be contributed to ice time, while with San Jose he was averaging 13 minutes of ice time, in Seattle he's been relegated to only 7 minutes per night. With the amount of minutes other forwards soak up as well as coach Dallas Eakins making sure that veterans Niklas Backstrom & Steven Lorentz are playing wiht multiple forward groups there just simply isn't enough minutes for a guy like Hinostroza or even a spot in the lineup when everyone is healthy.

Hinostroza was not available during this media day due to an illness but did leave a comment for reporters:

"I hope to earn more opportunities during the rest of the season and playoffs, but what's most important is winning and if that means that I am pushing these guys every day in practice then I will do my best at that job."

Grade: C

The last trade that GM Shervill made for the season actually happened a couple days before the deadline, as he made a move to bolster the scoring on the top 6 and create more options for coach Dallas Eakins:

Trade #4 - With the Florida Panthers

Received: W - Jayden Schwartz

Sent: D - Alec Regula, Y:2024-RND:5-Sea

So far there is too little of a sample size to properly grade this trade, however Schwartz made a huge splash in his second game with the team against the St Louis Blues contibuting a 5 point night including a hat trick to top it off. Schwartz had this to say regarding his recent offensive performance:

"It's easy to play when you have talented guys around you, Timmy & Tage make the game easier for me because teams are so focused on stopping them and what they want to do. A couple knicks and bruises along the way that I have to take care of but I'm looking to make sure that I can help this team with a deep playoff run.

With Schwartz being a pending Unrestricted Free Agent after the season, GM Shervill knows that he needed to make a move like this if Seattle wanted to be considered a threat in the west.

"There are a lot of great teams, with what we currently had in our lineup we knew we wanted to get some more secondary scoring to help Tage on that second line so we have two lines that are a threat to score at any time. With the skillset that he hads, Jaden fits perfectly into that role, if he performs the way I think he can, it will be tough to negotiate a number with his team this offseason."

Grade: TBD

After the acquisitions of Kuemper, Zadorov, Thompson, Maata & Hinostroza, the Kraken are 23-14-1 and have surged from being bottom dwellers in the west to becoming the 9th seed with 2 games in hand of the San Jose Sharks that are ahead by a single point. While currently on a 5 game winning streak and being 7-2-1 in their last 10 games, this Kraken team will be one tough opponent for whoever they draw in the playoffs.

Swift Moves in Seattle

KRAKEN COMMUNITY ICEPLEX - 65 Photos & 21 Reviews - 10601 5th Ave NE, Seattle, Washington - Skating Rinks - Phone Number - Yelp

A Media announcement has been scheduled before the next games with the title being hidden as to who is coming to the Kraken.

After a media day and introduction of new Head Coach Dallas Eakins it looks as though a move has been made in Seattle. 2 Stalls have been cleared out in the locker room, bags have been packed and valets have been sent ot the airport.

During the normal post practice media availability many players were ushered off the ice and into GM Shervill's office. Many of which stated that it was a checkin on how practices have been going with their new head coach.

It seems that a few of those conversations may not have had a positive outcome.

GM Shervill did say that he would love to add to this group, and with baited breath we are hoping that it is additions rather than subtractions.

Blissful Optimism Surrounds Seattle

By Dylan Shervill (Nov 2020) (Seattle Kraken) On Sunday 3rd December 2023 / 5:02pm

Seattle, WA.

Seattle Kraken First Ever Home Game (Player Introductions)

To begin the MFHL season the Seattle Kraken were expecting to be competitive and potentially look to push for a playoff spot. Despite their best efforts the team currently sits at 12-15-1 and last place in the extremely competitive Western Conference. To look at the teams record and state that they are playing poorly would be misguided, as they have scored exactly 100 goals in those 28 games, putting them 3rd in the conference overall for that metric. Unfortunately, the defence and goaltending has been lacklustre allowing 110 goals against, dead last in the conference. Another signature of the Seattle Kraken in the past has been to get games to Overtime or Shootout to at least correct one point. 2 seasons ago they had almost 30 points alone from overtime and shootout losses, this season so far they only have 1. When asked about the team's play so far during his media session, GM Shervill had this to say about the play of the team so far:

"Our play overall as a team has been way too focused on the offensive end, the blame doesn't fall only on goaltending or only on our defencemen. If forwards aren't backchecking, aren't putting pressure on their defencemen when we are in the zone, if we find ourselves consistently giving up odd man rushes. We cannot expect to win while making sloppy defensive plays as a team."

When asked about any changes to the group GM Shervill had this to say:

"We obviously have our guys we think will be part of this team for the long term, however the group we have right now simply put isn't getting the job done. We will look to move players as we see fit for packages of value that allow us to continue our rebuild/retool. On paper this team should be able to compete for a playoff spot, we just haven't figured it out yet. But ultimately we would love to add to this group."

After hoping that Gabriel Landeskog would be good to go for a playoff push later this season, GM Shervill shut down those rumors.

"We are going to let Gabe continue to handle is rehab and not risk rushing him forward, we are doing our due dilligence to make sure that he will be a major piece of our future moving forward. We just need to make sure he is healthy enough to do so."

Only a few short hours after GM Shervill's media availability an update was made to the program, it was reported that a coaching change has been made with the Seattle Kraken. All that was changed on the schedule was "Coaching Update"

Anaheim Ducks: Is Dallas Eakins Already in the Hot Seat?

Upon the 2pm start time for the media sessionj, Dallas Eakins entered the room as a surprise. Eakins, the first head coaching hire in GM Shervill's tenure comes at an interesting time. After coming off of a loss to the Minnesota Wild where the game looked like a potential win for the Kraken but ultimately was lost in the shootout. Eakins wanted to adress the media on his own and was asked the following questions:

Q: "What changes are going to be made to the team?"

Eakins: "Overall we have a stellar offensive group, maybe spreading that out more across the lineup will help, however we will be looking to implement a different defensive strategy to take advantage of the guys that we have on the back end."

Q: "What makes this Seattle team an attractive position to a coach?"

Eakins: "It's a pretty young group they have here that's leading the charge, they look hungry and want to win. To have one of the leaague's best defencemen also doesn't hurt."

Q: "What has your experience been with GM Shervill so far?"

Eakins: "The guy wants to win, he's been adamant in making moves that help improve this team and wants to bring a championship to Seattle. That I respect and I want to be the coach who accomplishes that"

Another step toward Kraken debut as practice facility opens

After the media session an open practice was held, many of the player introducing themselves to their new head coach and starting off the practice you could tell that the intensity was at a different level. The first line of Stutzle, Hayton and Kessel were flying around the ice together in a new found vigor. Makar was precise with the puck and getting his teammates into open oppoprtunites. All we can hope is that this leads to more wins for the Kraken as they will have to overcome a strong Western Conference to obtain a playoff spot.

Rumblings from the Deep SEA

By Dylan Shervill (Nov 2020) (Seattle Kraken) On Tuesday 1st August 2023 / 6:20pm

Seattle, WA.

In the depths of the offseason training program for the Seattle Kraken, new staff are being hired, players are coming back for training camp, but the phones are still ringing off the hook for GM Shervill. The latest of which has rumours swirling around the building that the Kraken have made a trade on the first day of their offseason program. During the morning break after the team scheduled workout each player was interviewed by GM Shervill to share their goals and aspirations for the next season. GM Shervill expains why he does this with each player.

"I want to know if there could be a better fit for them, whether it's here or with another club. If we have a guy who's disgruntled by being on our 4th line who could get top 6 minutes with another team I'm going to try and make that happen. Same for our defencemen, at the moment we have proably one of the more deeper groups in the league at the MFHL level. So there may be some guys who aspire to be top 2 or top 4 defencemen where they just simply won't have that opportunity with us but they might with another club. This also allows me to make improvements to the club that I may not have thought of, if theres a way to help build this club into a contender and all it takes is a new brand of tape or hiring an additional trainer on staff then I am all ears and fully support it."

One player who's never been shy to share his experience and mind with the media is Cale Makar. The superstar defencemen was critical of teammates effort last year as well as critical of GM Shervill during last season with the club.

"Before the deadline I was wondering if the guy was even at the facility. We rarely saw him, barely heard from him. Wondered if he was going to make any changes before the deadline for us to try and build some momentum heading into this year. So far the changes that he has made have been good. I'm incredibly confident in this group and confident that whatever moves Sherv wants to make are in the best interest of the club."

Upon hearing those types of criticisms from his teams best player GM Shervill brought in some new ideas, starting with the individual interviews with players and staff as well as doing more outreach for roster construction. But before long at the initial sign in day for the start of camp, after the first afternoon skate. Players were already being ushered into a meeting room

In the locker room there were already 2 lockers cleaned out and one new locker being made. This reporter found the torn off piece of what looked to be a plane ticket receipt with the initials CMH listed, with no other details, we will have to wait for more information to be disclosed to the public.

GM Shervill wouldn't disclose to any of the media today who was dealt or what happened, just simply stated the following:

"It is my job and my responsibility to try and build this team into a championship contender. If I can do that and get players into better positions for themselves then I see this as an absolute win. I'm incredibly excited to share the newest member of the Seattle Kraken family once all the paperwork is finalized and has passed his physical."

As we all sit and wait with aniticiaption. It is rumoured that the forward that GM Shervill has brought in will arrive in Seattle this weekend and the Seattle Times will have your first look at the new player and how it will shakeup the roster then.

From the Seattle Times, this is Dawson Trill.
